Finding Shan Gai

Established at the height of the coal mining era the historic Chinatown site at Cumberland, British Columbia grew to a population of more than 1800 with a vibrant businesses and entertainment including live theatre, opium dens, bars and hotels. These photographs were made on the sites where significant buildings once stood. Little evidence is left as nature has reclaimed much of the site since the last resident left in 1968.

Over a period of four years I photographed the site using a 4x5 inch view camera.
